Medicaid — or, HUSKY Health as it’s known in Connecticut — is the largest single source of health insurance for residents and includes the Children’s Health Insurance Program. Here are 10 reasons why HUSKY Health matters to you.

Medicaid is the largest single health insurer in the state!

With 1 in 4 adults covered by Medicaid, HUSKY Health covers more people in the state than Medicare and more people than any single commercial insurer. 

All-time low uninsurance rate, thanks to Medicaid!

HUSKY Health plays a key role in the state’s all-time low uninsurance rate of 5.6% as compared to the national average of 8%.

Medicaid means strong starts for parents and babies.

HUSKY Health covers 44% of all births in the state. Covered maternity care includes prenatal, delivery and postpartum services.

Medicaid helps ensure a healthy future.

HUSKY Health provides essential medical, dental and behavioral health services to nearly half of all the state’s children, for better educational and workforce outcomes. 

Medicaid improves children’s financial outcomes as adults.

Every additional year of Medicaid coverage for children compared to being uninsured contributes to their higher earnings, hours worked and labor productivity as adults.

Medicaid pays for 74% of nursing home care.

Medicaid — not Medicare — is the primary source of coverage for people who need long-term care services, like nursing homes, in the state. HUSKY Health pays for 74% of nursing home care, supporting 22,000 people. 

Medicaid helps our most vulnerable residents.

48% of HUSKY Health funds were dedicated to services and supports needed for people with disabilities or who are 65 or older. About 12,000 residents with developmental disabilities received services through Medicaid.

Medicaid supports our local school districts.

Medicaid supports local school districts with their special education services, bringing in over $20 million in federal dollars and supporting 28,000 public school students.

Medicaid is a lifeline for residents experiencing a mental health crisis or addiction.

HUSKY Health is a key payer for mental health and substance use disorder services provided by the Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services and Department of Children and Families, supporting 313,000 people.

Medicaid supports jobs across the state.

People who use HUSKY Health get care across the state, contributing to access for everyone and investing in jobs and local economies in all parts of the state.
