COVID-19 (Coronavirus) is a respiratory illness that spreads from person-to-person and can affect the health and well-being of at-risk older adults and people living with disabilities. In an effort to protect yourself—and others—see below for a short list of precautionary measures that can be taken in order to reduce the contracting and spreading of COVID-19.

Please note: The situation in Connecticut is emerging and rapidly evolving. Stay updated on information as it becomes available on www.ct.gov/coronavirus and https://www.cdc.gov/.

Protect Your Health at Home
According to the CDC, older adults, people with disabilities and people who have serious chronic medical conditions are believed to be especially at risk of catching COVID-19. By stocking up on essential and over-the-counter medications, connecting with your caregiver and preparing your home for extended stays, you can reduce your risk of getting yourself and others sick.

Get Meals & Groceries at Home
To ensure that you have meals and groceries in your home during this time, stock up on non-perishable food items (frozen, canned, etc.) to minimize trips to stores. In addition, consider the services that will deliver meals and groceries directly to your home, and request that they are dropped off directly outside your door to reduce direct contact even further.

Protect Your Health in the Community
The CDC recommends that if you need to go out in public, keep away from others who are sick, limit close contact (6 ft. of distance of more) and wash your hands as often as possible. To maintain social interaction during social distancing, stay in touch with friends and family by phone or email, and consider online options as a way to continue with engagement and entertainment.

During this time, it is imperative that you follow the guidelines as instructed by trusted, reputable sources to avoid myths, scams and hysteria.

What to Do if You Get Sick
If you are sick with COVID-19 or suspect that you may be infected with the virus, stay home and communicate with your doctor and caregiver to receive important medical care and recovery information over the phone. Avoid all public transportation, direct contact with others and clean hands, surfaces and common areas in your home as frequently as possible.
