The Housing Choice Voucher Program (HCV) helps individuals and families with low income to find secure, safe and affordable housing in the private market. Commonly known as Section 8, this program subsidizes rent payments.
An individual or family that is issued a housing voucher is responsible for finding rental housing in the community. The rental unit may be a single-family home, a town house or an apartment and it may include the renter’s present residence. Rental units must meet minimum standards of quality and safety as established by the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and the landlord must agree to rent under the terms of the HCV program.
A housing subsidy is paid to the landlord directly on behalf of the tenant. The tenant pays the difference between the actual rent charged by the landlord and the amount subsidized by the HCV program.
Note: There are waiting lists for this program. Waiting lists only open to new applications when most people on the list have been served.
