The magic you can experience in the library goes beyond books. Whether you’re looking to access useful resources that boost your quality of life, build new skills to support your mental health, or simply have fun in your own community, libraries are the perfect public hub to enjoy it all – for free! Read on to learn about some great benefits libraries can offer you.
Borrow more than books
Need some cookware or spices for a new recipe? Or a sewing machine for your latest creation? Maybe you want some seeds to start or expand your home garden! Before you go to the store to spend your money on these items, visit or call your local library to see if they have it in their Library of Things. Many public libraries have a Library of Things, or lending library, where members can check out items from power tools to sporting goods to support their needs. Having easy access to everyday items like these can help boost your quality of life and improve your sense of belonging as you borrow from your community.
Free classes/activities
Whether you want to learn a new language, hobby, or skill, libraries are a great place to find a variety of classes that will expose you to new experiences while stimulating your mind. According to Harvard Health, engaging in a new activity or skill challenges your brain, which in turn improves your mental health. Fortunately, the library offers multiple opportunities to try all kinds of new things. From CPR training and computer literacy courses to crafty activities and English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) classes, there are so many skills you can learn for free with the support of your community.
Social interactions
Positive social connections help support your emotional well-being and sense of belonging, while reducing feelings of isolation and depression, according to the CDC. Libraries are a great environment to socialize with others in your community through engaging activities, classes, and events. Your local library may also have a game collection you can borrow from, offering a fun way to foster new friendships through healthy competition. Staff members at the library also contribute to its welcoming environment by providing assistance and resources to help improve your visiting experience.
Free access to tech
Nowadays we rely on technology for so much, but gaining access to it can sometimes be difficult and expensive. Not at the library though! Many libraries extend Wi-Fi outside their walls and, according to AARP, nearly half of public libraries even offer a take-home Wi-Fi hotspot program for cardholders. You can also use your library card to access public computers for free. And in case you need computer services outside of operating hours, most libraries will also let members take home tablets, laptops, and other electronic devices.
Convenient and accessible borrowing
Individuals with visual or physical disabilities can visit the CT State Library for Accessible Books for additional services, such as free mail loans of books and magazines in braille or recorded format. Playback equipment is also provided at no additional cost. If your library doesn’t have certain materials you’d like to check out, over 191 Connecticut libraries are a part of a cooperative program allowing card holders from any town in the state to borrow items from other libraries. Can’t make it out to visit a library in person? You can also borrow library materials – including e-books, audio books, movies, and music – online using apps like Libby or Hoopla.
There are so many free resources and fun experiences waiting to be discovered at the library.
Check out your local library to see for yourself!
