Homemaker-Companion Services

Homemaker-companion services, a type of non-medical home care, helps older adults and individuals with disabilities maintain a comfortable and safe living environment and stay connected socially. These services include grocery shopping, meal preparation, laundry, and provide transportation to appointments as well as to recreational activities.

Note: Companions and Homemakers is also the name of a home care agency in Connecticut.

Eligibility Criteria 

Eligibility is often based on the payment source. Learn more under Financial Options.


Generally, the types of homemaker-companion services include:

  • Assist with phone calls and correspondence
  • Provide recreational activities and conversation
  • Assist with errands and supervise activities as directed, such as getting dressed and ready for the day
  • Provide transportation
  • Household duties such as laundry, vacuuming, dusting, washing dishes and washing floor

Financial Options for Homemaker-Companion Services

Veteran Services: The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and the Veterans Health Administration can provide financial support for a variety of services and supports.
