Non-Medical Home Care

Homemaker-companion services, a type of non-medical home care, helps older adults and individuals with disabilities maintain a comfortable and safe living environment and stay connected socially. These services include grocery shopping, meal preparation, laundry, and provide transportation to appointments as well as to recreational activities.

Note: Companions and Homemakers is also the name of a home care agency in Connecticut.

Services

Generally, the types of homemaker-companion services include:

  • Assist with phone calls and correspondence
  • Provide recreational activities and conversation
  • Assist with errands and supervise activities as directed, such as getting dressed and ready for the day
  • Provide transportation
  • Household duties such as laundry, vacuuming, dusting, washing dishes and washing floor

Financial Options for Homemaker-Companion Services

Veteran Services:
The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and the Veterans Health Administration can provide financial support for a variety of services & supports.

Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) Waiver:
This waiver provides services & supports for individuals with an acquired brain injury who are receiving or otherwise would receive care in an institution.

CT Home Care Program for Elders (CHCPE):
This program enables older adults to remain in their homes with services & supports instead of residing in a nursing facility or other institutional setting to receive care.

Long-Term Care Insurance:
Long-term care insurance helps cover the costs of long-term services & supports at home, in an assisted living facility or in a nursing home.

Reverse Mortgages:
A reverse mortgage is a type of home loan older homeowners can use to tap accrued equity in their house for cash. Recipients can use the money to pay off debts, supplement other income, or pay healthcare expenses.
