ECHO units are specifically designed for older adults and people with disabilities who want to lead independent lives. An increasingly popular option, ECHO enables individuals to reside near family who can provide help and support as needed. Also known as “granny flats” or “in-law apartments,” ECHO units are small, manufactured homes that are attached to the back or side of a single-family residence. ECHO units are not classified as mobile homes and are not necessarily permanent structures and can be removed when no longer needed.
Services and Fees
There are no services offered. Residents rely on family for assistance and/or may access community-based care, services and supports.
Quality of Standards
ECHO housing is guided by local town zoning laws. Although some state governments do have established ECHO housing programs, the State of Connecticut currently does not.
